HOMILY

11th October 1994

The Lord called to Himself Don Paolo on a Sunday, when the Church celebrates the resurrection of Christ. It was the same for Mother and also for Father. In time of grief, these are the gentle touches with which God the Father reminds us that He overlooks nothing and forgets nothing. When His hand seems heaviest, that is the time when He makes us understand that what happens is part of his loving plan for us.

As we gather together around the altar of the Lord, let us live it as a moment of thanksgiving. Francesco, Marco and I, Paolo’s brothers, with his other relatives, invite all those who have known him and for that loved and esteemed him, to join us in praising God for Paolo’s life and work, dedicated to the service of the Church and the poor.

Death is a difficult experience for all uf us. When it touches someone dear to us  and seems without reason, the heart feels rebellion and asks questions to which there is no answer. At such a time we are upheld by the thought thet even Christ, on the cross, addressed His “Why?” to the Father, and God left him without an answer until three days later, at the moment of resurrection.

God’s word, to which we have listened, guides our thoughts. They are pages which Providence itself has indicated: one from the last Mass celebrated by Paolo, on July 25th this year (2 Cor 4:7-25); the other of the Sunday on which he died (Mk 10:17-30).

Let us reflect on the call: “Jesus looked steadily at him and loved him”. The preferential love of Jesus, which in this event in the Gospel met with a refusal, found in Paolo a generous answer. Not a sad withdrawal, for having preferred other values, but a joyful “Yes” given once and for all and strengthened every day. It is beautiful to remember it herein this Cathedral, where through baptism he was born into the faith; where he received First Communion and Confirmation; where, still a child, he felt the first stirrings of his desire to be a priest; where he was ordained, more that 32 years ago. And it was here, while serving as assistant Parish Priest, that he put his seal on the choice of that mission, to which he dedicated himself till death and to which, we are sure, he still continues to offer himself, even now that he is in the dimension of full love in God.

In the mission chosen by Paolo nothing was easy: his was a hard life, continually depriving himself for the sake of the poorest, hostility on the part of the powerful with whom he never compromised, left aside even by good people who either didn’t know how or didn’t want to understand him. He lived the words of Saint Paul: “We are exposed to death for the sake of Jesus so that even the life of Jesus may be manifested in our flesh”.

Those who have known him over the years, will certainly agree with me if I underline,  as his constant attitude, the coherence of his life. From the years of his ordination in 1962 many changes have taken place: social conditions, theological viewpoints, political movements, slogans, lifestyles. How many rebels and protesters have come and gone like the tide. He kept on, attentive to how the situations were developing, ever faithful to the Gospel which he served but never used for his own ends.

All these qualities were even more evident in Paolo’s life, during the months of his illness, accepted with a contagious  serenity  and did so much good to those who were able to remain close to him. Mariagrazia’s heartfelt words, written also in the name of Danielino, sum up all the others: “Don Paolo, you were indeed a fine person. Your presence caused us to reflect. You were a great friend”.

He lived his suffering as he had done the rest of his life, without noise or parade. Just a few days ago, while dictating with great difficulty a few words for Marco and Luigi and for all the parishioners of Camaçari, he referred to his state of health in these words: “May God’s will be done”.

And God’s will has been done. For Paolo, who gave up everything for God’s kingdom, the words of Jesus have come true: “They will receive a hundredfold”. Now in a special way we see how God has enlarged his family: so many brothers and sisters, here in Fano, in other parts of Italy, in Brazil, and wherever there is someone who knew him and was touched by his captivating joy at being a christian and priest.

He was surrounded by so many signs of affection: our Bishop went to visit him in Brazil, ending once for all the isolation in which he had been left, and then he gave us the consolation of his presence as Paolo passed away; various groups of friends, at St. Pius X, in the Cathedral and in other parishes of the diocese helped him in his apostolic activities; a circle of good people remained close to him during his illness, so that of them he could say: “They make me feel still useful”.

Now Paolo lives in God, celebrating in eternity what he believed and what he wanted to build up, here on earth. We who remain want to live his ideals as well as his joyous and generous gift of self. Let us pray that the seed sown will bear fruit. That there will remain alive the commitment of good people on behalf of a mission that continues. That generous hearts may accept the challenge of Christ: “Come and follow me”, so that the void left by Paolo may be filled by others, “and that an ever more abundant grace, for the good of a greater number, may multiply the hymn of praise to the glory of God”.
